Motivations

Rachel Carson had always been interested in underwater life and nature because of her mother’s interests, which were based around nature. She was also influenced and motivated by the harmful industrial growth becoming more visible around her home. Carson knew a lot about nature and was very interested in it allowing her to see the industrial revolution’s negative changes on the environment right in her backyard, which was not being stopped. This made Carson start dedicating her life to act and fight for what had always been an important part of her life.
One of Carson's motivations was her mother who was able to teach her daughter to appreciate and become aware of Carson's surrounds. Rachel grew up on a Farm where her mom was able to teach her to explore and learn about her surroundings motivating Rachel to want to preserve the amazing habitats found all over the world. Mrs. Carson was an enthusiastic member of the nature study movement which allowed her to give Rachel a lot of backround information about the habitat on the Allegheny River in Springdale.
Another source of motivation for Carson was the pollution and industrial  growth occurring around her home. During Carson's life with her family at home the water and air in her area were becoming more and more polluted by the growing industry of coal-fired electric plants in Pittsburgh. The river that she had always researched and learned from was becoming filled with the leftovers from the plants and this caused Carson to want to act and devote her life to saving the environment through research and writing.
